Brevard County is situated perfectly, along the central Atlantic coast of Florida. We’re about 45 minutes east of Orlando’s world famous resorts like Disney World and Universal Studios. Current population is around 500,000 people in our 70 mile long county.
We have our own International Airport and we’re just minutes from Orlando International Airport as well. Our area is very family friendly, and features a truly great public school system with 8 of Florida’s Top 25 Elementary Schools, 5 of Florida’s Top 25 High Schools and ALL of Brevard’s Middle Schools are A Rated.
Port Canaveral is one of America's top cruise ship portals, with regularly scheduled cruises to the Bahamas, the eastern Caribbean or Mexico’s Gulf resorts on ships from Carnival Cruise Lines, Disney Cruise Line, and Royal Caribbean International.
Our Climate is fantastic, with weeks of warm, sunny and dry weather in the winter, lots of breezy weather in the spring and fall and cooler than you might expect weather in the summer. Snow is basically unheard of here, and we seem to be much, much less prone to extreme tropical weather than other southeastern U.S. areas like the gulf coast, south Florida and Texas.
Our economy is very strong here due to its excellent diversification. Lot of high-tech, aeronautic, space and defense contractors have offices here and provide good jobs for many Brevard residents. Many local entrepreneurs have started their own successful hi-tech firms after careers with NASA or other local tech employers. We also have a steady flow of family oriented tourism here. This is why our unemployment rate is extremely low (typically 3.5% to 4.5%) here.
Brevard County also boasts a surprising amount of entertainment and cultural attractions locally, as well as the obviously overwhelming amount of things to do in nearby Orlando. For example: the Maxwell King Center features theatrical productions, nationally known comics, rock and roll acts and country music performers. The Henegar Center in downtown Melbourne, the Parrish Theater in Titusville and the Cocoa Village Playhouse all host theatrical/musical productions. Brevard is home to numerous local theater groups and a number of museums and other cultural resources catalogued by Brevard Cultural Alliance.
Anyone who’s ever been to Brevard County knows that we still have lots of natural areas and wide open spaces. A few of the more prominent and popular include: The Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge which covers over 140,000 acres with hundreds of unique plant and animal species, including 12 endangered species. It is one of the world's premier birding sites.
The adjacent Canaveral National Seashore includes miles and miles of unspoiled beaches. The Enchanted Forest Sanctuary is very unique with walking tours on that traverse the unique transition from desert-like ridge scrub into the jungle-like hammock with its rain forest like canopy.
You can even watch a sea tortoise lay her eggs one night by visiting the Sea Turtle Preservation Society in Melbourne Beach. They host tours of turtle nesting sites in the world famous Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge also in Melbourne Beach. The pristine coastline south of Melbourne Beach is believed to be the most important nesting area for loggerhead sea turtles in the western hemisphere.
Surfers, fishermen and natural beach lovers can’t get enough of Sebastian Inlet State Recreation Area, Melbourne Beach. It really is a special place! |
